GPT Zero or Zero GPT? Best Performing Free AI Detectors

Artificial Intelligence Detection Software, as well as ‘Humanizing’ software, are naturally getting very popular in today’s digital world. AI detectors, also referred to as ‘ChatGPT Checkers’, are essentially built to identify if text is written by an actual human being or artificially created by a bot. It could also be a mix of both, which is the latest trend. The technology behind these checkers is based on several factors, revolving mainly around how unique a piece of copy is.

GPTzero.me is currently the most searched for AI detector in Google worldwide, offering a limited number of free checks. Scribber on the other hand, who offer a free unlimited content checking tool up to 500 words (scribber.com/ai-detector), get the most visits – over 10 million a month. Would that mean these are the best ways to check if a text is human-written or <NOT>?

GPT Zero

GPTzero.me is fairly accurate in establishing if a passage is written by a real person, partially written with the aid of Chat GPT or fully created by artificial intelligence. The actual site though, doesn’t always function as described. It claims anyone can get ‘7 free searches per day’, however, if you’re using Microsoft Edge, it allows 7 queries in total per unique user. You can go around that by opening it in a different browser, like Google Chrome, where you’d get a new set of 7 free queries every day. The site also claims you can get more free scans if you create an account but that too doesn’t always work. Overall, based on our research, the free AI-detection technology of GPTzero.me is good but limited, and the website has functional issues.

Zero GPT

Since ‘GPT zero’ is the most searched for term, you’ll find a lot of sites with similar names in Google. The most popular among them, scoring over 5 million monthly visits, is the Open AI and Bard detector zeroGPT.com (not to be confused with GPTzero.me). According to our tests, their AI detection technology is also quite accurate. It allows unlimited number of checks up to 15,000 characters each, which is around 2,500 words – several times more than other free tools! Furthermore, the site has other free tools like ‘AI paraphraser’ and ‘AI summarizer’, that can be very time-saving. It appears that zeroGPT.com relies mainly on income from all the banner advertising it’s currently displaying. Other similar sites seem to bet on paid subscriptions for an all-round service and offer only limited or more basic AI detection without a monthly fee. zeroGPT.com have more advanced ads-free business options too, that are paid. So, if you prefer seeing advertising to paying a fee, then zeroGPT.com is a great choice for thorough AI detection at no extra cost.

Scribbr AI Content Detector

On the other hand, Scribber’s popular AI detector (scribber.com/ai-detector) we mentioned in the beginning, is not as effective, based on our checks. On some occasions, it even classifies AI-written copy as having ‘0% chance’ of being artificially created! So, scribber.com/ai-detector is definitely NOT one of the best free tools for AI detection.

Sapling AI Detector

In contrast with Scribber’s technology which is not enough ‘AI sensitive’, Sapling’s AI checking tool (sapling.ai/ai-content-detector) is too sensitive in identifying how unique and human text is! It always spots artificially created content, but it also often classifies entirely human-written text as having medium ‘fake score’ (close to 50%). What is worse, is that the score on the website doesn’t always match the score in the browser extension they have. They do offer a complete one-month free trial, the extension is very handy indeed and their customer service is great too, but our tests have encountered far too many discrepancies. Sadly, Sapling’s AI checking technology is very disappointing at present.

Copyleaks AI Content Detector

Another tool worth mentioning, getting millions of monthly visits, is Copyleaks’s AI Detector (copyleaks.com/ai-content-detector). It offers free unlimited AI checks both on their website and through a convenient browser extension, which sounds good. However, the ‘basic’ free edition can only identify entirely human-written text. Currently, it doesn’t distinguish between partially and fully AI-generated text, or at least not free of charge. With that being said, you need to buy a monthly plan to make the most of Copyleaks’s AI Detection software.

UNdetectable Advanced AI Detector and Humanizer

And finally, what seems like the ultimate ‘AI Detector and Humanizer’ solution, is a platform called UNdetectable.ai. At present, it compares results from 8 AI detection sites (including most of the above-mentioned) and offers a limited number of free monthly scans. It generates ‘AI detection likelihood’, based on other detectors’ score which would be perfect if it worked the way it was intended to. Our research, however, found that the platform doesn’t always display other sites’ scores accurately. Therefore, UNdetectable.ai is ‘UNreliable’ at this stage.

Free AI Detection – THE VERDICT

Based on all the tests, carried out by gpt-tips.ai, THE BEST FREE AI DETECTOR is currently zeroGPT.com! This is not surprising at all, considering OpenAI is behind both ChatGPT and ZeroGPT.

If you want to dig deeper, we’d advise you to cross-check the results you get with other well-performing checkers like the similarly named GPTzero.me. Good luck!
