Microsoft’s Cutting-Edge AI Assistant

Starting on November 1st, Microsoft’s integrated Office apps will introduce a ChatGPT-inspired AI assistant that has undergone extensive trials and will be accessible to all users.

Known as Microsoft 365 Copilot, this AI innovation is designed to provide meeting summaries within Teams for those who opt not to participate. Additionally, it boasts the capability to swiftly compose emails, generate Word documents, craft spreadsheet charts, and assemble PowerPoint presentations. While Microsoft envisions this tool as a means to alleviate mundane tasks, concerns have arisen about the potential for such technology to displace human workers.

In its current iteration, the AI assistant could potentially run afoul of new regulations governing artificial intelligence by failing to transparently indicate when content has not been authored by humans.

Both the AI Act in Europe and China’s AI regulations emphasize the importance of informing individuals if they are interacting with artificial intelligence rather than human agents.

Collette Stallbaumer, who serves as the head of Microsoft 365, noted that it falls upon the discretion of the individual using Copilot to provide such clarification. She stated, “It is a tool, and people bear the responsibility of using it in a conscientious manner. When I send you a response, I may not explicitly disclose my utilization of an AI assistant in composing it. Nevertheless, humans remain integral and in control.

Conversely, the European Union asserts that the onus lies with the companies developing AI tools to ensure responsible usage.
